What Are the Benefits of Exo Shield

The Exo Shield is arguably a vital aftermarket installation accessible to anyone. But what exactly does it do? Is it legal? And do some people require it more than others?

In this blog, we aim to answer the question ‘What are the benefits of Exo Shield?’

The UK automotive aftermarket industry is thriving, ranking fourth in Europe and ninth in the world in terms of size, and turning over an annual £21.1 billion.

The sector supports 345,600 jobs and contributes £12.2 billion each year to the economy. And it is growing: the sector’s value is set to rise to £28 billion by 2022.

That’s why we at Car Specialist Customs are here to provide you with all the information you require to get the best car customisation possible, whilst being as informed as possible.

Is a window tint the same as an Exo Shield?

Although they may seem similar due to their look, an Exo Shield is completely different to a window tint in application and in usage.

A window tint primarily reduces UV rays and heat that enters your vehicle through the windows. In addition, it can add additional privacy by tinting the windows it is attached to, making it harder to see within the vehicle.

Additionally, window tints are added through the inside of the vehicle, and is usually made by a dyed, or metallized polyester film.

Exo Shields, however, provide a more practical result. They provide a practical resistance to physical damage that a windscreen can experience when driving due to debris etc. They are also applied to the outside of the windscreen, whilst also being made from a multi-layered plastic film.

Can you use a window tint and an Exo shield together?

In theory, it is possible to use an Exo Shield and a window tint on the same vehicle. They technically do not come into contact with each other, and neither are illegal, as long as your window tint is within the legal threshold.

We would recommend seeking the advice of a qualified expert in order to establish whether this is a worthy combination to use.

How does a windscreen get damaged when driving?

How does a windscreen get damaged when driving?

Unfortunately, there may be a variety of circumstances that can occur on the road that may cause debris or other items to damage your vehicle. The first and most important thing to remember, is that you should be vigilant every time you drive. A bit of vigilance can go a long way, whether that is preventing damage to your vehicle, or an accident or road collision.

Regarding how a windscreen can get damaged, here is a small list of potential factors you could face.

  • Extreme weather such as harsh winds causing items to fly into your vicinity. This can happen on motorways and residential streets alike.
  • Loose debris on certain roads that need work or in the middle of being developed. Keeping your distance from the vehicle in front of you can help to reduce the chance of debris hitting your vehicle.
  • Driving too close to an operational gritting truck.
  • Being in the vicinity of a car crash or other accident. Depending on the intensity, there is a chance debris of various sizes could be launched in any direction.
  • A vehicle in front of you discarding an item out of their window, or even if their vehicle is damaged, and wind resistance forces loose parts in your direction.

What are the benefits of Exo Shield?

So now that we have a basic understanding of the Exo Shield and its functions. How exactly does it benefit you?

  • The Exo shield is protective in nature. It increases the resistance towards impact on your car’s windscreen. It works to prevent cracks or shattering that can occur as a result of road debris.
  • Some Exo Shields can offer UV protection similar to regular window tint.
  • Exo Shields are made from a more robust film. This helps the durability and general resistance of the Exo Shield.
  • Exo Shields are entirely legal. Even if you get a version that has UV protection, which will tint the windscreen.

How is an Exo Shield applied?

Exo Shields are applied on the outside of your windscreen. If you use the services of a certified installer such as Car Specialist Customs, you can expect the following installation process.

  1. The windscreen is cleaned thoroughly, this is done to remove any debris, dust, or dirt that can influence the adhesion of the Exo shield film. Because it is applied to the windscreen on the outside, it must be carefully cleaned.
  2. The next process is taping the areas around the windscreen, such as the frame and trim. This is to protect them from accidental scratches or marks during installation.
  3. The Exo shield is then cut to match the dimensions of the windscreen. This can either be done by hand or via a computerised tool.
  4. The Exo shield is positioned onto the windscreen carefully, ensuring that the adhesive side is facing the windscreen, experts will then ensure proper alignment by using special tools or techniques.
  5. At this point, a squeegee tool is used to begin applying pressure and smoothing the film out against the windscreen. This process helps to remove any air bubbles between the glass and adhesive. For the curved areas of a windscreen, a heat tool is used. The use of a heat gun also activates the adhesive.
  6. Upon application, the excess material around the edges, if any, will be trimmed. This ensures a smooth and professional looking installation.
  7. Once completed, the windscreen and surrounding area are cleaned once again to remove any residual adhesive etc.
  8. The final step is to wait. The Exo Shield can require up to 24 hours of curing time. This allows the adhesive to fully bond to the windscreen. You are able to drive at this point, but you should avoid rolling down windows (if you get it installed on your windows) or exposing the vehicle to extreme temperatures.
