Can a vehicle be okay without paint protection film?
Paint protection film, sometimes known as ‘PPF’ is not a legal necessity, it is an optional customisation. The purpose of paint protection film, is to protect the paint job of the vehicle. Retaining the aesthetics of a vehicle is extremely important if you want to help to retain the vehicle’s value.
Issues that can affect a vehicles’ paintwork are
- Stains/dirt and debris
- Light scratches
- UV rays
Paint protection film uses a special vinyl that grants protection to the aforementioned issues. So although a vehicle will be okay without PPF, it won’t necessarily be better off than a vehicle that has paint protection film, especially if it is going to be sold to someone else in the future.
How much is paint protection film?
The cost of paint protection film comes down to a few factors, which usually vary between customers. These are…
- The size of the vehicle they are having wrapped.
- If their vehicle has custom features that affect the paint protection film application process. (Such as a unique front bumper that requires headlights to be removed to properly install the PPF inside the bumper).
- The cost of the labour for application.
- Specialist requests such as a custom vehicle wrap.
- If the vehicle being wrapped already has PPF that needs removal first.
How to remove scratches from paint protection film?
Most, if not all, paint protection film has the capacity to ‘self-heal’ from light scratches and scuffs. The vinyl used is sensitive to heat, so using a heat gun or even a hairdryer around the area for a short time will cause the impact on the vinyl to level out, which in essence removes the scratch.
That being said, this will not work if the scratch on your vehicle has penetrated or ripped the paint protection film. Light scratches affect the surface of the paint protection film, any scratch that destroys that surface is a more severe scratch/scrape.
Additionally, when using the heat source to fix the light scratch, be sure not to hold it against the affected area, be sure to move the heat source around the area affected. By keeping it in one place, you could overheat the PPF, making it less effective or even loose.
Can cleaning paint protection film remove scratches?
Not exactly. Cleaning paint protection film will help to reduce the appearance of light scuffs and scratches that it has had, but the previously mentioned heat method is the only way to remove them.
Is there a way to reinforce paint protection film?
Yes. Ceramic coating is a safe and viable option to apply over your paint protection film. It can be used instead of PPF, but using them in conjunction is far more effective. As the name suggests, ceramic coating creates a coating over your vehicle’s paintwork, and can be applied over PPF.
This coating grants similar benefits to paint protection film, whilst also granting some hydrophobic properties to the surface it is applied to. In conjunction with PPF, this creates a seriously strong layer of protection, which in turn has the potential to extend the lifespan of your paint protection film.
Does PPF installation mean my vehicle has to be disassembled?
Not at all, generally, parts of your vehicle won’t need to be removed for paint protection film installation. Although we realise some customers may have custom parts on their vehicle that require specialist installation of paint protection film.
If your vehicle does require removal of parts to install paint protection film, any reputable installer will make this clear to you before undertaking any work. Furthermore, a reputable installer will naturally conduct a quick assessment of your vehicle before applying PPF anyway.
What’s the best way to install PPF?
Using established vehicle modifiers is the best way to get your vehicle wrapped with paint protection film. Due to their experience, and the equipment they have on hand, there is less room for error. This goes for removal and application.
When we wrap your vehicle, we make sure to…
- Discuss what kind of wrap you want, and where you would like it.
- Measure the vehicle / relevant areas where the wrap will be applied.
- Clean the vehicle / relevant areas before applying
- Begin our process of application to your vehicle
- Inform you of any maintenance / dos and don’ts when it comes to the longevity of the wrap.
Can I install paint protection film myself?
Yes, you can install paint protection film yourself, though it can be complicated and difficult to do on your own, even if you do have the equipment and experience. If you have neither, it will be even more difficult.
The best option when it comes to saving money and time, is having paint protection film applied by a professional service such as Car Specialist Customs
PPF can be purchased online or in stores, some installers may also be willing to apply PPF that you have bought. But they will likely not be responsible for any issues that may arise with the PPF you bought.
