Don't Buy Paint Protection Film Until you Read This

Paint protection film can be a complicated arena to navigate. Whether it’s choosing the right provider, choosing the best method of installation, maintenance, and more. There are plenty of ways it can quickly become a headache and a hassle.

So with that in mind… Don’t buy paint protection film until you read this!

The UK automotive after-market industry is thriving, ranking fourth in Europe and ninth in the world in terms of size, and turning over an annual £21.1 billion. The sector supports 345,600 jobs and contributes £12.2 billion each year to the economy.

The UK automotive after-market industry seems to be on track to grow further, with a projected value of 574.11 billion dollars by 2030, which is over twenty times growth. With innovations in technology growing ever more sophisticated by the day, the forecast doesn’t seem to be too far off.

That’s why we at Car Specialist Customs are here to provide you with all the information you require to get the best car customisation possible, whilst being as informed as possible.

Paint protection film — the basics

Paint protection film, otherwise known as PPF, is an optional customisation that can be applied to the body of your vehicle, its main purpose is to protect the paint of your vehicle.

Made from tough yet flexible materials, the film acts as a sacrificial layer that has the potential to absorb scratches and chips without affecting the paint in most cases. Think of it like a screen protector for your phone, it can protect against a lot, but significant incidents can still damage it.

Additionally, PPF can repel contaminants and ensure your vehicle’s paint is protected from UV rays. By doing this, your paintwork remains free from discolouration, scratches, scuffs, blemishes, and stains.

Available to buy and apply yourself, or through professional car modifiers who can apply it for you, the latter option is recommended in most cases. We would only recommend installing PPF yourself if you have…

  • The equipment required
  • Previous experience
  • Someone to help
  • Access to water
  • A clean indoor space

Of course, paint protection film is a brilliant investment which has the potential to save on future costs that can occur as a result of not having paint protection film, such as restoring scratches or faded paintwork.

But does that mean that every single car owner should run to get paint protection film right now? As much as some car customisers would love that, you have to do some analysis first, before making the investment.

The point is that not every vehicle is appropriate for paint protection film, and in some cases, can actually create further issues for the vehicle. But rest assured, this is only in specific instances, which we will list below.

  • Vehicle damages: If your vehicle is already damaged, with issues such as broken or dented areas, holes, and severely deep cuts. Paint protection film will not be applied until these damages are fixed.

This is because these damages affect the application and usage of the paint protection film. Jagged holes and cuts can pierce the film, whilst dents can prevent the film from being applied correctly without air bubbles from forming.

  • Paint damage/rust: If your vehicle has significant paint damage, which can look like paint peeling from the vehicle, paint protection film can actually make this worse over time. In the case of rust, paint protection film won’t stop the vehicle from rusting further at that point.

Regarding existing paint damage, you can re-paint the vehicle, but must wait until it is completely dry until you apply the paint protection film.

  • If you rarely drive: If your vehicle is hardly driven, and stored in an indoor area away from sunlight, then it is extremely unlikely your car will be scratched due to its placement and usage. This means paint protection film wouldn’t be a required option for you, however, it may still be worth it if you would rather not take the risk.
  • Lease/rental: If you are leasing or renting a vehicle, you must be aware of the stipulations of the agreement. In some cases, some agreements allow for no customisation whatsoever, this includes paint protection film.

If you don’t know the stipulations of your agreement, get in contact with the provider before looking to get any customisations.

Is there any reason not to buy paint protection film?

There are no reasons that are tied to safety, security, or performance that would affect whether you would buy paint protection film or not, it is totally your preference. Everybody’s circumstances are different, we would suggest taking time to consider your options if the following factors apply to you.

  • Costs: If you have an array of financial obligations, and less room to manoeuvre with disposal income, we would propose saving money over time to afford paint protection film installation. The best way to do this is obtaining a quote from a provider first, and calculating how much you can save during your earning period to afford the cost of the paint protection film at a later date.
  • Maintenance: To experience the complete benefits of PPF, in addition to an extended lifespan, maintenance is required. Although quality paint protection film can last for years, if it is maintained, it can last even longer.

However, the maintenance process may be too tedious or time-consuming for some. That being said, there are services available that can do this for you at a cost. Consider this before buying PPF.

  • The Look: When applied over a vehicle, paint protection film can alter the generic texture of a vehicle’s surface, this results in a different ‘look’ to the vehicle, which some describe as glossy.

Some may not prefer this look as a consequence of the protection provided by the paint protection film.

  • If you’re selling the vehicle: If you are considering selling your vehicle, paint protection film should not be added just before you put it on the market, as the majority of damages and scratches have already been made. It will not help the value of the vehicle at this stage, and is just an additional cost you can’t recoup.

If you know you will sell your vehicle one day, apply paint protection film as soon as possible, to prevent any scuffs that can affect the resale value.

The best way to apply paint protection film

The best way to apply paint protection film is through a professional, as their expertise, equipment, and experience will secure a perfect and professional placement quickly.
