Starlights explained

Starlights explained

The Starlight Headliners (also known as Starlights) offered by Car Specialist Customs offer the unique factor of NOT being from LED lights, instead, they are made from fibre optic lights. These are lights that are refracted through fibre optic cables.

Are Starlights legal?

Yes, Starlight headliners are subtle enough to create an ambience all of the car occupants can enjoy, but are not bright enough to distract anyone inside the car or other road users, hence they are legal. The ruling on lights on your car have no specification on ambient lighting.

Functional vs Ambient lighting – what’s the difference?

Functional lighting, as the name suggests, serves a function, which in cars would be to illuminate the road in low lighting conditions. Interior-wise, functional lighting serves to help the driver get their bearings in terms of what is in the vehicle.

Changing these functional lights may lead to issues, as these lights are stronger and can damage the vehicle’s electrics if incorrectly installed, and can cause distractions or dazzle other road users if they are customised beyond the ruling of the law.

Ambient lighting is lighting in the vehicle that does not help you to drive, you can find this in the form of coloured lights in more newer vehicles, they could be in the footwell, beneath the windows etc.

Ambient lighting is purely aesthetic, it does not affect your vehicles functionality, and does nothing to other road users or the driver, hence why this kind of lighting (which starlights are under the banner of) is not affected by road regulations.

Driving with Starlights on

You can drive with Starlights on, they don’t affect your vehicles performance or the ability of the driver, it creates an enjoyable and sleek ambience that would only serve to make your passengers impressed and relaxed.

Starlight headliners aren’t a customisation that everybody does, but of those who do offer to install it, we guarantee that we are the most meticulous. Prices may vary amongst installers, but with us, you will have peace of mind and all of your questions answered before we even start.

Simply head to our page & click ‘get quote’ to enter your vehicle details in & enter in the message area what work you’re looking to get done. After which we will respond with a quote along with answers to any questions you may have.

Starlight headlining comes at two separate costs depending on if you’d want installation or not. For those not looking for installation, pricing will depend on the amount of starlights you wish to purchase.

For those wanting installation, prices may vary from vehicle to vehicle, along with the amount of starlights you require. The reason there is no set price is because different vehicles have different requirements in order to install the headliners.

What colours are Starlights available in?

The true depth of customisation for our Starlights is massive, available in a wide range of colours with up to 500+ options! You can choose white, several base colours or different variations.

Additionally, you can even also control how the lights twinkle, or if they stay on. The car Starlight Headliner can be optimised to twinkle at its own rate.

To add an extra layer of personability to your Starlights, you can download an additional app to control the rate of twinkling to a level that you see fit. The Starlights are controlled wirelessly through Bluetooth.

Installing Starlight headliners

Starlights can be added to almost any vehicle. It is possible for you to install it manually, however, you run the risk of damaging the wiring and other internal components in your vehicle. It is best to leave this to professionals with years of experience like Car Specialist Customs, the process of installation is as follows.

  • The process starts by disconnecting all dome, map lights and other trim pieces and removing the vehicle’s headliner.
  • Hundreds of small holes then need to be drilled or pinned in the top of the headliner mould, to fit the fibre optic lights, which are individually carefully placed just above the headliner fabric.
  • These lights are then attached by adhesive and then stranded together to be run to the location of the Light Source, typically in the trunk, rear seats, or under the vehicle’s dash, wherever you choose.

How long does it take to install Starlights?

With our installation process, Starlights usually take a number of hours to install, this, of course, is dependent on your vehicle and the state of the areas of installation. Rest assured, the time we take to install any of the products and services we supply is to ensure their functionality.

Can I install Starlight headliners myself?

Considering the previous description of our thorough installation process, we would recommend that unless you have vast experience in installing Star headliners, you should allow an expert to do it for you.
