Can You Tint Front Windows UK

Can You Tint Front Windows UK

Window tinting has limitations in some cases, depending on where you decide to apply the tint. Although the quality of tint can affect the end result, so can the level of tint you decide to get.

With front windows being the part of the vehicle you always look through when driving, can it be tinted?

In this blog, we will answer the question ‘Can you tint front windows in the UK?’

The UK automotive aftermarket industry is thriving, ranking fourth in Europe and ninth in the world in terms of size, and turning over an annual £21.1 billion.

The sector supports 345,600 jobs and contributes £12.2 billion each year to the economy. And it is growing: the sector’s value is set to rise to £28 billion by 2022.

That’s why we at Car Specialist Customs are here to provide you with all the information you require to get the best car customisation possible, whilst being as informed as possible.

The basics of window tinting

The basics of window tinting

Window tinting is a simple, legal and affordable modification that provides a sleek look for your vehicle, whilst adding a level of privacy or protection.

Window tints make use of a specialised film that reduces the amount of light that can enter through the window it is applied to. This results in four key benefits, which are:

  • Reduction of UV rays entering the vehicle, making it safer for your skin, and cooler in the vehicle.
  • A level of privacy that prevents people from seeing inside the vehicle.
  • In the instance of an accident, the film has been known to hold a window to prevent shattering, resulting in cracks on the window, but not wayward dangerous glass.
  • Less light can enter the vehicle, this allows for the vehicle’s occupants to not be affected by the sun in certain instances.

What does VLT mean in window tints?

The window tint spectrum comes in percentages, which refers to visible light transmission (VLT). VLT is the amount of light that passes through your window. So, if you choose a 15% tint, this means that 15% of visible light can get through.  As a result, the remaining 85% of light won’t pass.

Can you tint front windows UK

Yes. The front windows of an eligible vehicle can be tinted. However, there is a stipulation. The windscreen must allow at least 75% of light through. The front side windows have an allowance of 70%, whereas the rear passenger windows and back window have no limit to the amount that they can be tinted.

The reason for these allowances is to prevent the driver’s vision from being obstructed. Although it could be argued that the rear window limit is slightly confusing, as it is an important window for a driver to use. That being said, there are always wing mirrors that can assist with rear viewing.

Is it illegal to have a darker tint than specified?

Yes. If your vehicle has a tint that is darker than the aforementioned percentages on certain windows, it will be classed as illegal. There are devices available to the authorities that would allow them to test the tint level of the window.

If you are found to be using illegal tints, you may be left with the following repercussions, depending on the severity of the incident.

  • A fine
  • A removal request (Or on-site removal)
  • Points on licence. (This may be more relevant if the vehicle had been stopped due to dangerous driving).
  • Confiscation of the vehicle (Again, this may be likely in more serious situations, and not specifically just because of an illegal tint).

Is it better to install a window tint myself?

If you are new to window tinting, and don’t have an understanding of good quality tints, whilst being aware of the legal tint allowances, or have the relevant equipment or space to test and apply the tint, then no. It would be much better for you to visit an official car modifier who can guide you through the process and ensure your modification is legally allowed.

The benefit of using a professional is that the application process would be much more thorough, and you will be able to ask any questions regarding upkeep, dos, and don’t, etc.

How much is a professional window tint installation?

How much is a professional window tint installation?

Window tinting is generally above or below £100. At Car Specialist Customs, our prices range from £50 — £250. However, there are a few factors that actually determine how much you pay for your tinting, these are:

  • How many windows you choose to tint
  • The style and shade of the tint
  • Any supplementary work that needs to be done to ensure the tint is applied

Other providers of tints may offer competitive rates but do not offer the same level of care, quality and time that we provide with each of our customisation services.

What type of tints are available?

The film inside window tints can be made of different materials: you can get ceramic film, metallised window film, carbon film, dyed window film, and hybrid tint film.

  • Ceramic tint offers the best result out of all window tints. It contains tiny nano-ceramic particles that are invisible to the naked eye but are strong enough to block 99% of the sun’s damaging Ultraviolet rays. Considered the overall best window tint.
  • Metallised window tint comprises metallic particles, which reflect heat. It is scratch-resistant and shinier than other window tints. However, metallised window tint can interfere with mobile phones and radio transmissions.
  • Carbon tint comes with a matte black finish and does not contain metal properties. It blocks infrared light from entering the car and helps keep your car cooler, meaning you can save on air conditioning costs.
  • Dyed window film is a window tint that has been coated with dyes to create darkness or colour. Dyed window tints come in all colours but are mostly black, grey, blue, or purple.
  • The hybrid tint film is made using both metallised tints and dyed tints. It looks opaque from the outside and is cheaper than metallised window tint.
