Paint protection film explained
Paint protection film, is an optional protective accessory that can be applied to your vehicle, it is a film made from vinyl, which has properties that allow the vehicle it is covering to be protected from…
- Dirt, dust, and other contaminants
- UV rays emitted by the sun
- Light scratches
Additionally, as long as the wrap is applied correctly and maintained properly, it can give the vehicle a sleek, glossy look.
PPF comes under the category of a vehicle wrap, specifically, a clear vehicle wrap. There are other variants of vehicle wraps that you can apply to your vehicle. For the purposes of this blog, we will stick to PPF.
How much is PPF?
Paint protection film can vary in price on a variety of factors. The first factor is if you’re applying it yourself, or through a service.
If applying yourself, the cost of the PPF will vary depending on the amount you get in a roll, the provider, and the quality etc.
When it comes to going to a vehicle wrapping service, pricing on application may vary. But generally, services like Car Specialist Customs offer vehicle wraps subject to the size of the vehicle being wrapped.
This means that vehicle wraps are quoted based on the size of the vehicle, and the subsequent, work, manpower, and time required to apply it correctly.
Can you go through a car wash with paint protection film?
This entirely depends on the car wash you visit. If you visit a car wash that is completely automated, then we do not recommend that you go through it with a car that has PPF applied.
This is because the combination of the water pressure being applied to the vehicle, in addition to the speed of the automated brushes, and the chemicals, can damage and even partly remove your paint protection film.
The edges of your paint protection film are the most susceptible to loosening, so you have to avoid intense water pressure, or vigorous agitation to those areas specifically. The level of intensity in a car wash can be too much for PPF to withstand.
That being said, even if you are visiting a car wash that handwashes its vehicles, you should still be cautious. This is because chemicals used, in addition to their method of cleaning, will impact the PPF.
For the best clarity, be sure to find out in advance if the car wash you want to visit has experience cleaning vehicles with PPF, and has car shampoos that do not damage the paint protection film.
If you are unable to take your vehicle to be cleaned, there are mobile valet services that will clean your vehicle for you, you just need to enquire if they can clean vehicles with paint protection film.
Can I wash paint protection film myself?
Yes. Paint protection film can be cleaned at home provided you have the required equipment. Cleaning a vehicle with PPF is not a complicated or exhaustive process at all, as long as you have the time and equipment, it can be done. Can PPF be removed at any time?
Essentially, yes. Granted that you have the correct equipment on hand and the right expertise, you can remove paint protection film. That being said, we do not recommend the removal of PPF unless there is a valid reason to.
Removing PPF forcefully and incorrectly could lead to damages on your vehicle, so it must be handled with the same level of care as it was when it was being applied.
What is the best way to maintain PPF?
Paint protection film, such as the one we at Car Specialist Customs apply, has a warranty of 3 years, meaning it can last for 3 years as long as it’s maintained properly. This in an indication of the baseline quality of PPF we use, however, with superb maintenance, the PPF can last even longer.
Here are some additional steps you can make to extend the life of your paint protection film…
- Store the vehicle in a garage or indoor space, with a cover.
- Clean the vehicle in the correct manner on at least a monthly basis, depending on how often the vehicle is used.
- Try to park in shaded areas.
- Reinforce the PPF with ceramic coating.
- To the best of your ability, try to avoid scenarios where your vehicle is likely to be scratched. (For example, parking in a very tight spot).
What is the best way to get my vehicle wrapped?
Using established vehicle modifiers is the best way to get your vehicle wrapped with paint protection film. Due to their experience, and the equipment they have on hand, there is less room for error. This goes for removal and application.
When we wrap your vehicle, we make sure to…
- Discuss what kind of wrap you want, and where you would like it.
