Do Ghost Immobilisers Work on Range Rovers? Everything You Need to Know

Ghost Immobilisers are an aftermarket security solution for your vehicle, but do they work on every vehicle?

In this blog, we will share our response to the question ‘Do Ghost Immobilisers work on Range Rovers?’

The UK automotive aftermarket industry is thriving, ranking fourth in Europe and ninth in the world in terms of size, and turning over an annual £21.1 billion.

The sector supports 345,600 jobs and contributes £12.2 billion each year to the economy. And it is growing: the sector’s value is set to rise and continue rising with advancements in technology.

That’s why we at Car Specialist Customs are here to provide you with all the information you require to get the best car customisation possible, whilst being as informed as possible.

What is the code to unlock a Ghost Immobiliser?

Vehicles that are fitted with a Ghost Immobiliser require a special code in order to unlock and drive the vehicle. The code will vary significantly, this is because the codes are implemented through pressing buttons that already are in the vehicle. These could be buttons by the steering wheel, main console etc.

Furthermore, different vehicles may have more or fewer buttons, increasing the options available for activating the vehicle.

Finally, drivers will create their own sequence in whichever order they please, and however long they want the code to be. The only way it can be found out is if they are being watched as it is being entered.

Because of this, it is good practice to include a ‘hidden button’ in your sequence, essentially using a button that is obscure from view and doesn’t require a big movement to reach and press it.

What happens if I forget my security code?

If you forget the security code for your Ghost Immobiliser, you need to reset it, you can do this by contacting your original installer who can facilitate this process for you. In any case, if you have issues with remembering the code, write it down and keep it safe. Once you can enter the code without using the written reference, dispose of it.

Do Ghost Immobilisers work on Range Rovers? Everything you need to know

Yes, in a vast majority of cases, a Ghost Immobiliser will work on a Range Rover, and a host of other vehicles. If done correctly, your vehicle won’t start unless your selected code is entered, activating the engine properly.

That being said, A Ghost Immobiliser may not work in certain vehicles, such as classic cars. For the best results, you should always consult with a  professional Ghost Immobiliser installer, they will able to install the device without compromising the other electric/engine systems in your vehicle.

Furthermore, due to their experience, a professional installer can easily install your immobiliser ‘invisibility’, meaning that it is impossible to find where the immobiliser was installed, preventing it from being damaged on purpose or removed without your knowledge.

Reasons your Ghost Immobiliser doesn’t work on your Range Rover

It’s very rare that a modern vehicle isn’t compatible with a Ghost Immobiliser, so if you have issues with a Ghost Immobiliser installed on your Range Rover or other vehicle, may be one of the following reasons:

  • A faulty device
  • Incorrect installation
  • If any internal modifications have been made on your vehicle.
  • Battery issues with your vehicle.
  • Damage to the Ghost Immobiliser

Does a Ghost Immobiliser have its own battery?

No, there may be brand-new models in the future, or alternative immobilisers that use its own battery, but Ghost Immobilisers draw power from the vehicles battery. They do this as they require a consistent power supply to remain active. This allows it to detect potential thieves and operate when needed.

If it had its own battery, it would need replacing and/or recharging at intervals, this reduces its effectiveness and can create situations where your vehicle is compromised.

Furthermore, the Immobiliser operates by integrating with the vehicle’s ‘CAN bus system’ This is the internal communication network of the vehicle. In layman’s terms, it allows the device to communicate with the vehicle and recognise when someone is trying to start the vehicle without entering the correct code.

Does it drain the car battery?

No, a Ghost Immobiliser does not excessively drain the car battery. The are designed to be energy efficient, the rates of power used can vary between models, but the amount is not noticeable at all. However, if your car battery is already compromised, extremely old, or drained, the Ghost Immobiliser will still take as much energy as it can.

If you already have a battery issues with your vehicle, ensure you rectify them first before installing your Ghost Immobiliser.

Can I install a Ghost Immobiliser on a leased or hired vehicle?

In a vast majority of cases, the answer is no. A leased/hired vehicle usually has stipulation in the agreement that prevent any permanent modifications, or modifications that alter the interior or exterior of the vehicle.

That being said, there may be options available that already have immobiliser systems installed in the vehicle, so this may be a better option to explore if you are looking for a vehicle.

For some, it may not make sense that a hiring or lease company wouldn’t want an immobiliser installed. It’s not that the companies don’t value security, it’s more the fact that they can’t afford to rely on who you choose to install it.

Although everyone should ideally use a professional installer, some may choose to install themselves, or go for a cheap installation. This can result in damages in the vehicle, some of which may be significant depending on the process. Therefore, leasing/hiring companies would rather avoid the possibility of repairing damages if the cause can be avoided altogether.
